Too fat. Too skinny. Too tall. Too short. Too muscly… everyone is ‘too something’ these days. The time has come to stop being so judgemental – not just towards others, but mainly towards ourselves. But interrupting the ‘self-judgement’ cycle is hard, we get it. So here are 3 steps to help make that happen:
- Focus on your health, not on your body: When you are your healthiest, you will look (and feel) your best. Period. That’s why your health is the only thing that matters. Plus, changing the focus stops you feeling inadequate and makes you feel empowered. Suddenly, by focusing on your health, you have things you can actually do to better it – you can take charge of your health and with it your body.
- Recognise that you’re both a masterpiece and a work in progress, at the same time. Should you find yourself falling into the easy trap of telling yourself “I’ll be happy once I lose 5kg”, “I’ll be happy once I can see my tummy lines” or “I’ll be happy once my butt has perked up”. STOP. You may not be where you want to be right now, but negative self talk and focusing on the things you dislike about yourself isn’t going to get you where you want to go any faster, it’ll just make the process harder, mentally and physically. Instead, recognise that your body is incredible now and by working on bettering your health (and with it, your body), it’ll be incredible then, too.
- Highlight what you love about yourself (instead of bashing what you hate). What about your ever progressing leg strength? Your big smile? Your sense of humour? Or noticing the progress in your eating habits across the last few weeks and months? What about all the things that make you unique? That’s what makes you, you – that’s the stuff that matters.
So next time you find yourself critically standing in front of the mirror – don’t walk away, just focus on the good. Focus on your health, on how you’re bettering it everyday and on how incredible your progressing body actually is.
Enough is enough. You are enough.
